Brazilian telecom regulator Anatel has scheduled the 3G spectrum auction for 18 December and set a minimum price of BRL 2.8 billion for the total of 44 licences that will be awarded. Four frequency bands will be offered, in the range of 1.9 GHz to 2.1 GHz, in each of the 11 areas previously defined by Anatel. The auction rules will be formally published on 23 October. The winners will receive the right to use the spectrum for 15 years, renewable for another 15 years. According to Anatel’s timetable, around 3,600 Brazilian municipalities will have access to the new service in eight years time. During the first 12 months after receiving the licence, the operators must offer 3G coverage in at least 50 percent of the urban areas of all states and municipalities with more than 500,000 inhabitants.
