High-speed UK rail line set for auction

The UK’s first dedicated high-speed rail line from London to the Channel tunnel looks set to be sold in a government-run auction after the chief executive of the company that built it said there was “a very clear case” for doing so.

Rob Holden, chief executive of London & Continental Railways, said an auction could be held for the 110km High Speed One link between London and the Channel tunnel.

The Department for Transport announced last year it would decide on LCR’s future after the second section of the line – from Ebbsfleet in north Kent to St Pancras International – opened. The section opens to the public on November 14 after a ceremony on Tuesday.
