Philippines - Transco employees angered by private auction of state firm

Published October 29th, 2007

Employees’ unions of the state-owned National Transmission Corp. (Transco) accused the government of bad faith in concealing the lease terms of the national power grid that has been scheduled for auction on Nov. 5.

Walder Revelar, president for the Mountain Province area of the Mindanao Transco Employees Association (Mintrea), said they were protesting the government’s “absence of transparency,” after talks with the Public Sector Assets and Liabilities Management Corp. (PSALM) about granting unions a role in the auction collapsed on Thursday.

“They decided to hold a private auction and we are not to be involved in the transactions. We have reached out to the [power sector officials in government] because employees who may lose their jobs in this deal need some measure of control over their fate. This is much worse than our situation in Napocor (National Power Corp.),” Revelar said.
