Kenya coffee auctions rise 14percent

Coffee sold at the Kenyan auction rose by 14 percent to 45.5 million kg in the 2006/07 season and earnings increased to $131 million from $118 million previously, managers of the weekly sale said on Friday.

The average price for beans sold dropped to $132.13 per 50-kg bag compared with $135.52 in the previous season, according to statistics by the Kenya Coffee Producers’ and Traders’ Association that manages the weekly sales.

The Nairobi Coffee Exchange handled 43.4 million kg in the 2005/06 season.
