Santo Antonio auction scheduled for Oct 30

Brazil’s mines and energy ministry (MME) has scheduled for October 30 the auction to build and operate the 3.15GW Santo AntĂ´nio hydroelectric plant, MME said on its website.

Santo AntĂ´nio will start selling power in 2012, MME said.

“The government will make sure that the Santo AntĂ´nio auction will be competitive,” Brazil’s presidential chief-of-staff Dilma Rousseff told journalists in Rio de Janeiro.

Power regulator Aneel will finalize bidding rules for Santo AntĂ´nio. The rules will be disclosed later in the month following a period of public hearings.

A special-purpose company must be formed for the project if a foreign company, fund or consortium wins the auction. Federal power companies will join the project through a minority stake.

The government will discuss the role of federal energy companies in consortiums after the project’s public hearings end August 17, Rousseff said.
