Air India to auction class upgrades

Published August 11th, 2007

The public sector airline plans to encash upgrade opportunities and leave the field open to passengers.

If seats are vacant on a higher class, the airline will give passengers an option to quote a price for upgradation. The highest bidder gets the upgrade and the system is similar to the one followed by some European Ailines such as Virgin Atlantic.

“We have decided not to upgrade tickets on the newly-acquired aircraft which is flying Mumbai-New York non-stop. In future, no one will be upgraded on any of the non-stop flights except the person who pays the maximum for the upgrade,” a senior government official said.
