Ofcom delays two of its spectrum auctions

Published May 29th, 2007

Ofcom is reported to have decided to postpone an auction of spare 3G spectrum until 2008 following lobbying from existing licensees. The auction is understood to have been due later this year and was expected to raise as much as GBP2 billion (USD4 billion) for the government. The watchdog acknowledged that the ‘wide range of issues’ raised by telecoms and media companies over the 2.6GHz spectrum band necessitated further consultation. A spokesman for O2 told The Sunday Times that ‘We welcome the decision. We hope that this consultation will result in Ofcom bringing forward proposals that will result in a level playing field for existing 3G licence holders.’
