Mexico Plans to Speed Up Pace of Airwave Auctions

Mexico plans to sell more radio spectrum by the end of 2008 than in the previous six years as the government pushes for increased competition in the communications industry, a regulatory official said.

Sales of licenses for mobile telephones, regional television and satellite communications are in line with President Felipe Calderon’s goal of sharpening competition in Mexico, where 77 percent of mobile service and 90 percent of fixed lines are sold by Telefonos de Mexico SAB and America Movil SAB, both controlled by Mexican billionaire Carlos Slim.
